Why Now — Rising global focus on sustainability, material reuse, and ecological storytelling in art

Portuguese artist Vanessa Barragão creates large-scale textile works that transform recycled materials into immersive representations of ocean ecosystems. Working with discarded yarns sourced from the textile industry, her practice is rooted in sustainability and conscious production methods.

Her artworks often resemble coral reefs, algae, and marine landscapes, built through a combination of traditional handcraft techniques including crochet, weaving, felting, embroidery, and hand-tufting. These layered processes result in richly textured, almost sculptural surfaces that extend beyond the flatness of traditional tapestry.

Barragão’s visual language is deeply connected to her upbringing by the sea in southern Portugal. The ocean is not only an aesthetic reference but a conceptual foundation where her works reflect both the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems.

A key aspect of her practice is the use of upcycled materials. By reusing textile waste, Barragão directly addresses the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industries, which are among the most polluting globally. Her work therefore operates both as a visual experience and as a form of environmental commentary.

Many of her installations highlight the effects of climate change, particularly coral bleaching and the destruction of underwater ecosystems. Through shifts in colour, density, and texture, her pieces can evoke both thriving marine life and its gradual disappearance.

Why now?
Barragão represents a broader shift in contemporary art toward material consciousness and ecological responsibility. Her work demonstrates how traditional craft techniques can be recontextualised to address urgent global issues, turning art into both a sensory experience and a call for environmental awareness.
